Prepping for Asbestos Removal
Trigger Levels mean amounts of material as follows:
  • Single-family residential – trigger levels are 50 linear feet on pipes, 32 sq feet on other surfaces, or the volume equivalent of 55-gallon drum.
  • Commercial properties are 260 linear feet on pipes, 160 sq ft on other surfaces, or a volume equivalent of a 55-gallon drum.
  • School building’s trigger levels are three sq ft or three linear ft.

Colorado State Regulation 8, Part B, states that any material with more than 1% asbestos is asbestos-containing.

Failure to comply with the State Reg 8 can bring hefty fines up to $25,000 daily. Contractors need to be state-certified.

How do I know if I have asbestos in my home?

Asbestos can’t be detected through normal human senses. Samples should be taken by a certified industrial hygienist and tested by a qualified laboratory to determine if asbestos is present in your home.

 

Asbestos has been classified as a human carcinogen by a number of U.S. Government agencies (HHS, EPA, and IARC). A carcinogen is a cancer-causing agent. Yes. It is important to know if there is asbestos in your home before any demolition or remodeling. It is crucial to get all suspect building materials tested, removed, and disposed of properly if asbestos is present.

Asbestos is a highly regulated material in Colorado and must be disposed of properly. It is illegal to dispose of asbestos-containing materials in any way other than what is approved by CDPHE.
